Public Services Clerks Job Description

Surrey Libraries seeks energetic and enthusiastic applicants who love books. 

Public Services Clerks sorts, shelves and cleans library materials, keeps the library in neat and orderly condition, handles incoming and outgoing materials.  Public Services Clerks also assists in basic clerical tasks, such as:

  • processing materials
  • assisting with displays
  • program setup or takedown
  • answers basic and directional customer questions
  • locates and retrieves materials, such as holds and traces. 

Clerks work part-time hours at one branch but can pick up hours at other locations.

  1. Performs shelving and shelf reading.
  2. Keeps library in neat and orderly condition.
  3. Handles incoming and outgoing materials.
  4. Sorts, shelves and cleans library materials.
  5. Assists in basic clerical tasks such as processing of materials, assisting with displays and 
    program setup/takedown.
  6. Answers basic and directional queries, assisting the public at the point of contact.
  7. Locates and retrieves materials, such as holds and traces.
  1. Knowledge of alphanumeric sequencing including the Dewey Decimal System.
  2. Excellent communication skills.
  3. Excellent customer service skills.
  4. Ability to pay attention to detail, including accurate sorting and spelling.
  5. Ability to maintain good working relationships with other staff.
  6. Ability to meet physical demands of the work including safe handling of materials.
  7. Ability to work positively in a fast paced and challenging environment.
  1. Completion of two years of secondary school, or equivalent
  2. 15 years of age or older
  3. Available during library open hours, including evenings and weekends
