Wills and Estate Records - Quebec

The Québec system for estate records differs from the rest of Canada. The same process is used to find Notarial Records of any type.

Wills are deposited with a notary who is required by law to retain them. On the retirement or death of the notary the records (or greffe) are transferred to the Court House of the Judicial District in which the notary had practiced law. A copy of a will may be obtained from the Judicial Archives of the district, from the notary who drew it up, or from his successor. An excellent article regarding Notarial Records (with links).

A list of notaries for each location can be searched by the notaries name, the district or the region: (French only) at Bibliothéque et Archives Nationales du Québec
